2681QCA - Thoughts on Typography and Layout

This was my type specimen poster featuring my selection of typefaces. However, I made a change to my initial choice for the "Typography as Discourse" section based on feedback received in class. According to the feedback, this particular typeface didn't align well with the others in terms of maturity. While the rest of the choices conveyed a mature tone, this one was perceived as "too fun" in comparison.
Printing process note: The initial book printing process was carried out by OfficeWorks, unaware that they did not include bleed cutting. Consequently, I had to do it myself using a small guillotine available at home. This proved to be quite challenging, although it offered a valuable learning experience. During the book binding stage, the page dimensions were slightly misaligned. Furthermore, the color quality wasn't great, and there was an error in the printing of the cover's gsm (grams per square meter) weight. Despite requesting a 200gsm cover, OfficeWorks printed it on 100gsm instead. To ensure a superior outcome, I decided to invest in the services of Burleigh Printer.
The target audience for this book primarily consists of designers and creatives in general. These individuals are already actively engaged in the industry and typically fall within the age range of 25 to 55 years or older. They possess a deep appreciation for typography and lettering, showcasing a genuine passion for the art form. Moreover, they are avid book lovers who appreciate the value of insightful and visually appealing publications.

This book is specifically crafted to cater to the sensibilities of those working in the creative industry. It is designed to be a coveted addition to design studios, marketing agencies, and even personal spaces such as home coffee tables. Its purpose is to captivate and inspire readers with its engaging content and aesthetically pleasing design, making it a desirable item for individuals seeking both knowledge and visual stimulation.
Reflecting on the Typography and Layout, I am amazed at how much it has expanded my awareness and understanding of the impact that typography and layout choices can have on design projects. Prior to taking this course, I had a basic knowledge of typography, but now I feel much more confident and knowledgeable in this area.

One significant change is that I am now less afraid of the process of finding the right typeface for a project. Previously, I would often feel overwhelmed by the vast array of options available, unsure of how to make an informed decision. However, through the course, I learned about the principles of typography and the importance of considering factors such as readability, hierarchy, and mood. This newfound understanding has empowered me to approach typeface selection with greater clarity and purpose.

Learning about the process of creating a typeface was important and interesting, there’s so many details on “behind the scenes” – so many principles and rules, that learning about thar in the course sparked a newfound excitement within me to explore the creation of my own typeface family. Learning about the intricacies of letterforms, font design principles, and the process of developing a cohesive type system. The typeface choice can change the message completely, can dictate the success of delivering a clear message or an impactful message and so on.

In addition, I was surprised by the power and versatility of Adobe InDesign, which was extensively covered in the course. As someone that has been working as a Junior Designer in a studio for 1 year now, I’ve often chosen Adobe illustrator over InDesign even when the project is recommended to be done in InDesign, because I always thought InDesign was too complex and not efficient. However, through the course, I discovered the immense capabilities of InDesign for creating professional and well-structured layouts. It revolutionized my understanding of how to effectively organize and present content in a visually appealing manner. As a result, I now look forward to delving deeper into InDesign, expanding my knowledge, and incorporating it into my design projects.

Overall, the Typography and Layout course has been a transformative experience for me. It has not only increased my awareness, appreciation, and skills for typography and layout, but it has also instilled a sense of excitement and curiosity to further explore these areas. I am eager to apply them to future design endeavours, creating impactful and visually stunning works – being conscious of its purpose.
